The Danish Language
Danish is a North Germanic language spoken by around six million people, principally in the country of Denmark. It is also spoken by 50,000 Germans of Danish ethnicity in the northern parts of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and 25,000 Danes in Norway where it holds minority language status. Danish is a mandatory subject in school in the Danish crown territories of the Faroe Islands (where it is also an official language after Faroese) and Greenland (where, however, the only official language since 2009 is Kalaallisut), as well as the former crown holding of Iceland. There are also Danish language communities in Argentina, the United States and Canada. Danish is mutually intelligible with Norwegian and Swedish.
Professional Danish Translation Services
Founded by the Vikings in the ninth century, the Kingdom of Denmark included England, Norway, Sweden and some regions of German and France for short periods of time. Its economical and political power enabled the Danish kings to spread the Danish culture and language to several parts of the world. Danish is a Scandinavian, East Nordic language; it has an official status in Denmark, Greenland, Faeroe Islands and it manages to gather almost six million speakers worldwide.
The language used in the Danish media and legislation is standard Danish, a language based on the dialects spoken around Copenhagen. Over the centuries, Danish has changed more than the other Scandinavian languages; it has adopted many words from Lower German, French and English and has thus managed to evolve and modernise itself.
Danish can be easily distinguished from Norwegian and Swedish due to its peculiar pronunciation (mainly the glottal stop). As the Scandinavian economy manages to attract more and more worldwide clients each year, the demand for Danish translations grows exponentially.
